Steve thinks that young girls learn much of what to expect from men in their teen and adult lives from how their fathers treat them when they are girls. So, Steve, with his daughter Melanie Archer as his guest-host, interviews Meg Meeker, M.D., author of Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters, and of The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers.

I have to say that being now past 50, my observations of the parenting of family members and acquaintances (and myself for that matter) have led me to agree with this author. Kids need rules enforced by firm (not strict) parents. Kids need parents more than friend/parents. The generations since my parents, who grew up during the depression and survived the second world war, are self-centered and prone to inflated expectations on the whole. There are many exceptions to this, and I’d bet those exceptions were raised more along the lines of the author. I’ve heard parents who’ve raised exceptional kids who became well-adjusted adults, and they would agree with the author from what they’ve told me.
