The times I have called 911 in South LA, LAPD has always responded within 3 minutes. Newton Division
American football, an absolute f****** mystery.
Caller number one claimed he’d been sent a letter by his ISP to cease using bit torrent. Marc and Dina correctly advised him to just be stingy by “getting off” in Dina’s words. In other words, remove the file you just downloaded from the shared area of your bit torrent client software so no one else can download it from you. Since I’ve seen clients continue sharing even though files have been removed, you should really close the client. Then again, the client still runs in the background often unless you close the apps process in task manager (Windows). Even the, I wouldn’t trust it for long. Rebooting would give me more confidence, but these apps don’t exactly have the good app writing seal of approval, so watch for indications of excessive upload activity.
There are programs claiming to “hide” your IP number from those hunting online for downloaders of copyrighted material. The effectiveness of them has been called into question, partially because the “black lists” of IPs they block from seeing your IP is publicly available and if they wanted, they could just change their IP on a daily if not hourly basis so it would be impossible to avoid their notice. But these programs, to any extent they are effective, only mask the bit torrenter from outside interests, often law offices who will present your IP to a judge who would issue a subpoena to your ISP to divulge your identity so they can issue a warrant for your arrest for copyright infringement. The IP masking programs are of no use against your ISP which knows everything about your online activities. The caller was sent a ‘word to the wise’ from his ISP which might well save him from being brought legally to task had his wild and abandoned uploading – downloading gone on unabated.
If you bit torrent, you are on your own in a land of legal ‘wild west’. Learn the code of stay off the streets at high noon. And after some version of SOPA is adopted as law, all bets are off. The rules of law will all be different, and so will the pirates’.
