Max, great choice of El Guapo as a top villain. Comedic villains don’t usually spring to mind, so props for thinking outside the box. I know you didn’t like Spaceballs, but Rick Moranis cracked me up as Dark Helmet when I was a kid.
Speaking of !Three Amigos!, you both mentioned how you didn’t like it the first time you saw it, but now you do. I think this concept would make an interesting Top 6 List: movies you hated the first time you saw them, but since then have come around on. The way I would rank the films is by the greatest gap between how much you disliked the initial viewing and how much you like the movie now. Off the top of my head, a few films that would make my list are 2001, Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven, and most recently, The Tree of Life. I was bored to tears when I saw this in the theater (based on the Fustians’ recommendation), but when I watched it on cable a couple weeks ago, I was surprised by how much it moved me. It was a totally different viewing experience. I’m not sure what the difference was; the only thing I can think of is I watched it with subtitles on, so I could actually understand everything the voice-overs (or, in Terrence Malick’s case, “whisper-overs”) were saying.
