A road trip movie I really liked that wasn’t mentioned last week was a British comedy starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon simply called “The Trip.” I highly recommend it.

Last week the Fustians mentioned that “Midnight Run” was the first film in which Robert De Niro played a comedic role. While I don’t totally disagree with that, I would like to point out that he played a funny/silly character in “Brazil.”

I liked Harold Hill’s characterization of “Meek’s Cutoff” as hypnotic. I fell into a trance while watching this film and thoroughly enjoyed it. I fell into the same tranquil state of mind while watching “The Tree of Life.” And thanks goes to Max because I never would’ve heard of this movie had he not mentioned it on the show and given it a good review.

Finally, I thought Harold Hill (and any other fans of “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World”) might get a kick out of the video link below:

About road movies from last week; Duel? A TV movie? Hmmm. I did not know that. I just naturally thought it was one of Spielberg’s theatrical releases when I rented the DVD. Now for top 6 WINNERS THE ACADEMY ACTUALLY GOT RIGHT (and you’re right, it ain’t often), these are my picks:

1.BEST PICTURE 1974 “THE GODFATHER PART II”
    2.Best Picture 1972 “The Godfather”
    3.Best Actor 1972 Marlon Brando/The Godfather
4.Best Supporting Actor 1982 Louis Gossett/An Office and a Gentleman
5.Best Picture 1967 “In The Heat of the Night”
    6.Best Supporting Actor 1987 Sean Connery/The Untouchables

One honorable mention: Best Picture 1976 Rocky

Does FELLINI’S SATYRICON count as a road trip? If so, there’s your winner.

I’m compelled to wax disagreeable with respect to the praise that Harold Hill and just about everyone else (except maybe Barry) heaped upon PAN’S LABYRINTH. I saw PL when it came out based upon the buzz, which was much as Harold described: Intelligent adult fantasy. But what hit me was 1) Politics and, as usually happens in a political movie, 2) Flat, boring characters.

This was set in the Spanish Civil War. Briefly, it was Fascists versus Commies, a sort of warm-up to WWII. It bugs me that Commies get better press than Fascists; they’re both totalitarian scum in my book. In retrospect, I appreciate that Franco, who won the war with help from Adolf and Benito, then screwed the Axis by keeping Spain out of WWII.

So PL alternated between trashing Franco (who is still dead, last I heard) and showing that moron girl blundering through la-la-land. In one case, she visits the other world after being told not to eat anything. So what does she do? She munches a morsel off the plate of an ugly sleeping monster, and then gets chased. Why did she do a dumbass thing like that? No reason! They could have written an excuse into the script. Like, I dunno, the Fascist man had given her mother syphilis, and only a magic bean from the table would save her. No, the dope just wanted a snack. A stupid film, I tell you!

Oh, as an aside, you Los Angeles people need to visit Bahooka Tiki Bar before it closes on March 10. Google Bahooka to find their website and read news reports of their tragic demise. Don’t miss out, or you’ll regret it all your days.

Justin mentioned Plato’s allegory of the cave. For those who miss the reference and would like the background — and this is worth knowing, if for no other reason than to get one up on your unenlightened friends and associates — here is a link to a short YouTube video that explains the allegory using delightful claymation.
